Damascus Steel
Although we use recycled files and 440-C stainless steel, our primary emphasis is on Damascus steel. The making of Damascus knives is an art form that dates back hundreds of years, originating in the city of Damascus, the largest city of Saudi Arabia. In time, this particular process of knife making was taken up by Japanese sword makers and was used as well in Viking daggers.
Over the last 30 – 40 years there has been a resurgance of Damascus knife making. The production of this particular type of steel requires a high-level of skill and patience.
Typically, Damascus steel contains 2% carbon or slightly higher. This high carbon content creates stronger bonds within the steel at a molecular level and makes a stronger blade. An average knife, made with any other kind of metal, will contain slightly less than 1% carbon.
